Facebook held its big Facebook Connect event today, and the company announced that it has changed its name to better focus on the metaverse it’s trying to help build. To do this, the company is changing its name to Meta.
With this Meta name and trademark, Facebook will not be required to use the metaverse tools and ideas owned by Mark Zuckerberg and the company. “Right now, our brand is closely related to one product,” he said. “But over time, I hope we will be seen as a metaverse company,” Zuckerberg said during his presentation.
“In order to reflect who we are and the future we hope to build, I’m proud to share that our company is now Meta,” Zuckerberg explained.
Zuckerberg also wrote a file Blog post Explaining more about what the name change means for Facebook, it looks like the company structure won’t change, but the way the company reports earnings will.
At the event, which you can watch above, Mark Zuckerberg spent over an hour talking about all things metaverse and how it will shape the future. It seems that the Meta doesn’t want to control the metaverse, but instead is just an essential part of it. “Our role on this journey is to accelerate the development of essential technologies, social platforms, and creative tools to bring life to life, and weave these technologies into our social media applications,” Zuckerberg said. Blog post.
It looks like Facebook as a social networking site will still exist as part of the Meta offering, but it won’t be the company’s main focus. “From now on, we’ll be metaverses first, not Facebook first,” Zuckerberg said.
The company has provided some details about the future of VR and AR, including a very limited sneak peek at a futuristic headset and its codename.
The new VR headset, which Meta calls Project Cambria, will fall at the higher end of the price and specs spectrum to match. It’s likely that this is the Oculus Pro we’ve been hearing rumors about lately, but we’ll have to wait until more details about the headset are announced before we know for sure. It’s due out in 2022, so we should learn more soon.
The team at Meta also talked about a new AR device called Project Azeray. This seems like a little further, but it promises to bring true augmented reality experiences into the amazing thin lenses.
