How to Play Audiobooks on Google Home

Google Home and Google Nest devices have a wide range of services built in to meet your audio needs, from YouTube Music and Pandora to Spotify and iHeartRadio. Unfortunately, you can’t find Amazon-owned Audible on the list.

Since Amazon and Google have been longtime rivals, this service is not natively available on either Google Home or Google Nest devices.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t listen to Audible podcasts or your favorite audiobooks on your Google Home or Google Nest speakers.

Let’s go through three methods you can use to start playing Audible on your speaker.

1. Bluetooth from your phone

The great thing about the Google Home or Google Nest speaker is that it actually doubles as a Bluetooth speaker. This means that after you pair your speaker with any device with the Audible app installed, you can start listening to your favorite podcasts and authors right away.

This method is ideal if you do not have the Google Home app installed on your phone or tablet. To get started, follow these steps:

  1. Say, “OK Google, bluetooth pairing.” Google Assistant will then respond and ask you to open the Bluetooth settings and search for the name of the Google Home or Google Nest speaker.

  2. Open Bluetooth settings and pair your device with the speaker. Make sure to associate it with the name that Google Assistant mentioned earlier.

  3. If the pairing is successful, you will hear a tone from the speaker.

  4. Open the Audible app and play the audiobook or podcast you want to listen to.

  5. Adjust the volume on your phone accordingly.

2. Use the Google Home app

Aside from playing Audible over Bluetooth, you can also use the Google Home app on your phone to send audio from the Audible app to your speaker.

Before trying this method, make sure your speaker is connected to a Wi-Fi network (the same network your phone is using). You should already have the Google Home app set up and connected to your speaker.

  1. Open the Google Home app on your device Android or iOS device.

  2. Select the speaker you want to use.

  3. tap on Send my voice> send audio> start now.

Open the Audible app and play an audiobook or podcast. You will start hearing the sound on your speaker, and you can adjust the volume of your phone accordingly.

3. Use Chrome on your desktop computer

If you don’t have the Audible app installed on your phone or you just want to play Audible through your desktop computer, Chrome will let you stream audiobooks to your Google Home or Google Nest speaker.

This method is a bit counter-intuitive, since Audible’s web player pops up from the main website, so the casting option doesn’t appear right away.

In this approach, you first need to connect your computer to the Wi-Fi network that your speaker uses. You can then follow these steps:

Audible web player window

  1. Open the Chrome browser.

  2. Go to the Audible website and sign in.

  3. Go to the audiobook or podcast you want to listen to and play it. A new window will then appear.

  4. tap on spit. A popup will appear at the top of the window with the list of available devices.

  5. Select the speaker you want to send the audio to.

  6. Adjust the volume on your computer as you see fit.

Enjoy your favorite audiobook or podcast

With Audible, you can keep up with your favorite authors and podcasts at any time, whether you’re working out, doing chores, or waiting for your next Zoom meeting.

And while it’s not a native service on Google Home and Google Nest speakers, you can still play your favorite Audible content with these three solutions. Now, you are no longer restricted to playing your audiobook and podcast on your phone or tablet.
