United were decimated by arch-rivals Liverpool 5-0 in their back garden last Sunday.

The result left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer firmly wedded to his job – with a four-man shortlist to be replaced by the Old Trafford chiefs after standoff talks.

But Arsenal legend Merson thinks United’s rivals are hoping for it Wins This weekend, they travel to Tottenham on Saturday night to keep Ole at the wheel for a little while longer.

in a Sky Sports In the column, Merson wrote: “Everyone in and around the race for the top four and Europe – West Ham, Arsenal and Leicester – will be fanatic about Manchester United’s win over Tottenham.

“The damn thing is that they will want Manchester United to win so that Solskjaer stays.

“Just look at Chelsea since Thomas Tuchel joined – they’ve won the Champions League and are now the favorites to win the title – to see what impact a new coach can have.”

Merson continued: “Manchester United go in circles.

“People keep saying they have improved under Solskjaer, but what do you mean by ‘improvement’?

“This is Manchester United, they are there to win the league, not to increase numbers or finish second.

“The second is not good for them.”

Antonio Conte and Brendan Rodgers are believed to be leading the race to replace Solskjaer.

But reports claim Rodgers is a favorite of the Manchester United board, with Conte being seen as too ‘abrasive’ to take responsibility.
