Birmingham plot to keep Riley McGree with the Australian star’s mascot ends in December as he heads to MLS

Birmingham want to keep Australian midfielder Riley McGarry for the rest of the season.

The talented youngster McGarry’s spell with the Blues ends in December and he is set to head to America and play for the new MLS franchise Charlotte.

The international has been signed with Yanke for three seasons, but the Blues would like him to stay in England a little longer.

McGree participated six times in this campaign, most recently scoring a late winner against Swansea in a 2-1 win.

Back in 2018, McGree scored an impressive Fifa Puskas Award-nominated goal for Newcastle Jets with a terrible scorpion kick.

He started his career with Adelaide City, before moving to Europe to play for Club Brugge.

However, he failed to appear once for the Belgian club – and eventually returned to Adelaide, after a stint in Melbourne City.

In 2020, the MLS expansion team Charlotte FC signed McGarry and immediately loaned him to Birmingham.

McGarry finished last season with 15 championship games, scoring on his first start within two minutes.

Since then he has become a fan favorite due to his tireless play in the middle of the garden.

Earlier this year, McGarry made his national debut as a late substitute in the 3-0 win over Kuwait in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

In his debut against Chinese Taipei, he provided assists in a 5-1 win – for which he was awarded the Man of the Match award.
