Crystal Palace are preparing to cancel Jean-Philippe Mateta’s loan deal in early January with the striker not in Vieira’s plans

Patrick Vieira would allow striker Jean-Philippe Mateta to leave Crystal Palace in the next window and cut off his loan.

The Frenchman failed to shoot and was told he was not part of the club’s future plans and that his move from German side Mainz would not be permanent.

Mateta is officially with the Eagles on loan until the end of the season, but could move forward sooner if he wants playing time.

It would also give the Palace space to acquire an additional striker in January with additional payroll pay.

The 24-year-old moved to Selhurst Park earlier this year on an initial 18-month loan deal.

But he never managed to establish himself as a key player for the team under Vieira or his predecessor Roy Hodgson.

Of his seven matches with Al Qasr last season, the French youth international started just two.

He scored only once – a dramatic heel-foot win against rivals Brighton at AMEX Stadium.

And that strike remains his only goal with Palace with the player a marginal figure this season, so far he has participated in only three matches in all competitions.

Starting in the opening game of the weekend’s 3-0 defeat against Chelsea, Mateta was also in the starting line-up when Watford beat the Eagles in the second round of the Carabao Cup in August.

The former Lyon forward has been limited to just four minutes of Ligue 1 since then.

He was off the bench in Palace’s impressive 2-0 away win over Manchester City on Saturday.

Goals from Wilfried Zaha and Conor Gallagher Palace netted only their second win this season, and the club sits thirteenth in the table.
