1 dead, 3 injured in shooting at California city councilman’s home

One person was killed and three others injured in a shooting at the home of a California city official where an outdoor party was held early Saturday morning, police said.

In a statement, the Gilroy Police Department announced the death of a man at the home of Gilroy City Council Member Rebecca Armenares, and the three survivors were taken to hospital, two of them with “life-threatening injuries.”

Gilroy Mayor Mary Blankley said in an email that Arminaris was not physically hurt.

The department said the violence occurred just before 1 a.m., when officers encountered a large outdoor party. Police said they believe the shooting was preceded by an altercation.

Armendariz did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gilroy, with a population of about 60,000, was once an agricultural town famous as the “garlic capital of the world”. Now the city is asserting its own region, Silicon Valley.

The city was the scene of a mass shooting in 2019, when a 19-year-old who had fought at the Center for White Supremacy opened fire from a semi-automatic rifle at the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, killing three, including two children, and wounding 12 before that. He shoots himself.
