Police shoot a car that tried to run over them in New York City: sources

NYPD detectives opened fire on a car they had just parked in Manhattan Tuesday in connection with a citywide pattern of theft — when the driver tried to ram the officers, police sources said.

Police said the shooting occurred just after 3 p.m. on East 99 Street and Madison Avenue, a block from Central Park.

Detectives from the NYPD Robbery Squad were trying to tow the car because they believed it was involved in a burglary.

Sources said it was when the driver tried to break into it – prompting one of the investigators to fire a shot as the suspect slipped.

A police source said that the police were conducting an examination at the hospital to determine if anyone had been shot.

New York Police said no other details were immediately available.
