Video games with tragic beginnings and opening sequences

Some people think that the opening of any video game should not be slow, while others think that it is important to get to know a new world in a way that is not rushed and natural. Whatever you think of the best video game openers, it’s often hard to argue against a game that expertly throws you into the thick of things with an immaculately crafted opening segment.

10 Mass Effect 2

There’s likely no explanation needed for Mass Effect 2 to be included here, especially if you’re a huge fan of the series. The opening of the second game shocked and continues to shock people when they first took the title to this day.

Instead of some hopeful shouts in space to reacquaint yourself with the Normandy crew, everything goes wrong and you pretty much die at the start of the game. It’s a shocking decision, but one that makes a lot of sense in hindsight.

9 Resident Evil 2 Remake

A really nice thing about most of the Resident Evil series is that things tend to go seriously bad right from the start. Being trapped in a mansion, haunted by a ferocious creature, attacked by local villagers, and in the case of Resident Evil 2, you inadvertently end up trapped in a city full of zombies.

While none of the games start with heroes in good shape, Resident Evil 2 Remake really goes above and beyond. Instead of starting with a big crash and zombies in the streets, you will start a more frightening gas station, before you are plunged into this whole mayhem.

8 Skyrim

It’s easy to forget how hopeless you were at the start of Skyrim. You are taken to the execution, and you even watch one happen before things go wrong: a random dragon appears.

Sure, it all ends up working for you, but that doesn’t mean the situation isn’t terrible. You narrowly avoid beheading until you’ve nearly roasted a dragon alive, a situation that most wouldn’t call exactly ideal. However, it was necessary to set off on one of the greatest adventures in gaming.

Zelda Link to Sword Master’s Past

For those who haven’t played it in some way, A Link To The Past is a deceptively dark game. Before you enter the game’s first real dungeon, the entire kingdom is turned upside down, and you narrowly escape with the princess.

Before you can do that, your only family, your uncle, is killed and left alone in the sewers of Hyrule Castle. Even worse, you’re just a kid who has to experience it all. Fortunately, Link is a hero who will always keep moving no matter what amazing possibilities lie ahead – even if he doesn’t have a reliable companion.

6 the last of us

It is likely that no one who played The Last Of Us will ever forget how heartwarming the opening part was. It’s kind of a fake, making you think the game will start slowly, but a sudden outbreak finds its way into Joel and Sarah’s house.

In an attempt to escape, she encounters waves of injured people attacking innocent civilians just to try to escape the violence. The entire clip is punctuated at first by the breakup with Tommy and then the final blow representing the tragic death of Joel’s daughter Sarah.

5 dead space 2

Few games really start out the way Dead Space 2. For a moment, it looks like Isaac might get the help he desperately needs, but this takes a quick turn when he starts seeing his dead girlfriend.

Just minutes later, someone woke up Isaac trying to save him, but that’s when things really went wrong. With his arms still tied, you have to take Isaac to safety while the Necromorphs dash towards him from every direction. It’s a shocking start, but it gave the series the legendary status it once held.

4 blood borne

While many games allow story events to go wrong in a cinematic sense, Bloodborne is never the kind that can be done. Often considered one of the hardest Souls games, Bloodborne gives players a reality check right from the start.

As you stumble across the world, and still get to grips with the somewhat new controls, you come across a werewolf-like beast. The problem is that you don’t have a good way to defend yourself and it can take you out in a few ups and downs. Everyone died because of it on their first try, but that’s intentional so that’s okay.

3 Uncharted 2

It has to be said that things have been going wrong right since the beginning of Uncharted 2 in a bit cheap fashion because the opening is really more of a quick take on the story. Despite this, the beginning of this part is still one of the most harrowing experiences in gaming.

Who needs to start a game and have a nice conversation in a car when you can just hang out amazingly high on a train? The whole part is the part that sends most people’s bodies into an involuntary grip, especially since the train seems to be collapsing around you.

2 fallout 4

The Fallout series as a whole begins in a very difficult situation. The game takes place in a post-nuclear wasteland, something that puts the entire world in a great deal of trouble. However, it can be said that Fallout 4 starts with everything going wrong right away.

Instead of growing below the surface, you have to escape from impending nuclear strikes to hide in a vault. Once you get there, you kind of go into a chill, but you wake up just in time to see your child kidnapped and your wife shot.

1 Super Mario Odyssey

Most of the Mario games are pretty simple, but Mario Odyssey manages to introduce a few surprises into the classic formula. From the start, Mario Bowser fights, but things don’t quite go his way. Using his strong top hat, Bowser outsmarts Mario.

He actually fails to save Princess Peach at first and has to seek Cappy’s help in order to be rescued. The hit, the ship tossed, and the failure to save the girl puts Mario in a pretty bad place right from the start of the game.
