Despite having a 19-46 record over the past four years, the New York Giants can say they are officially rebuilding for the 2022 season. Head coach Brian Dabol and general manager Joe Schoen were brought in on the same schedule. The Giants have also allowed their youngsters to develop and have chosen to cut players to create plenty of space, including key player back corner James Bradbury.
New York still isn’t in a great place with the salary cap, with $5.4 million left in the cap space according to Overcap. However, Big Blue will have more than $50 million in space for 2023. It’s all about building their roster for the coming years. One player who can be transferred during the season can give the Giants assets for the future.
Bleacher Report Alex Kay Make a list of one player every NFL team needs to trade in in the near future. For the Giants, Kaye made it clear that running back for Sacon Barkley should be on the trade block.
“It may take a while for a suitor to emerge, but getting him now, opening up discussions and eventually moving him through the season when a contender desperately needs a capable comeback can increase the yield of the 25-year-old G-Men.”
Barkley was drafted with the second overall selection in 2018 by former general manager Dave Gittleman. The Penn State producer came out of the gate hard and was NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year In 2018. He scored 15 total touchdowns and passed over 2,000 yards of melee that year.
However, he has suffered multiple injuries since then. He tore his ACL in 2020 and his comeback in 2021 was unsuccessful, finishing last season with just 856 yards from scrimmage and four total touchdowns.
New York tried to correct the mistakes made by the previous regime. Barkley has been the subject of commercial rumors since Gettleman’s departure after the 2021 season. The 25-year-old addressed the rumors in the off-season.
“I just want to kill, go crazy,” Barclay said in April. “I am tired of the BA being said about me. I want to go out there and prove to this organization that the player they drafted still exists.”
Will the giants trade with Barkley?
The Giants and Dabol remained steadfast with Barkley as one of the key pieces in their attack. Barkley was also executed as a pass catcher on Daboll’s offense and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.
Barclay only Record four total touchdowns Last season and half of them came at receptions. He finished the 2021 season with 41 catches for 263 yards. That’s nowhere near as exciting as Barkley’s rookie year when he posted 91 receptions for 721 yards and four touchdowns.
However, the Giants plan to showcase Barkley’s talent across the board in 2022, which would help fourth-year quarterback Daniel Jones.
New York picked Barkley’s option for the fifth year before the 2021 season.
If the Giants season goes south, Barkley will be a prime candidate for trading in 2022. Barkley will enter free agency after 2022. He is in the final year of his rookie deal and has made $7.2 million this year.
