Some iPhone 14 Pro phones have scary camera problems

The iPhone 14 Pro may come with an all-new 48MP sensor, but it doesn’t seem to work smoothly for everyone. Some users are reporting issues when their new phone’s camera actually gets stuck out of the blue.

iPhone 14 Pro units are already starting to get into the hands of customers, and a few of them have reported on social media platforms like Twitter and TikTok that their camera appears to be very broken in some apps. On a number of devices, camera use on third-party apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat will show a flickering, unfocused camera feed accompanied by an ugly, grinding sound coming from the camera module. It also seems to happen with the front camera as well.

The problem appears to be related to a misconfigured/disabled Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). While we can’t say for sure that this happens to all iPhone 14 Pro users, there are a growing and alarming number of reports on social media. A lot of these users also reported that their camera works perfectly when they use the iPhone camera app, and that it is only disabled in third-party apps. Looking at this, it definitely looks more like a software issue than a hardware issue that requires a recall.

For now, we definitely avoid using your phone’s camera in third-party apps if you’re affected. While it is not a hardware problem CurrentlyThis issue stems from physically wobbling the camera sensor, as evidenced by the grinding sound. And it can definitely damage the camera permanently if you misuse it. For now, we’ll need to wait for Apple to acknowledge the problem, or release an iOS 16 update to fix it.
