3 reasons why the basic Mac Studio model works for most people

Mac Studio is without a doubt one of the most powerful Macs you can get today. Apple brought many features that people wanted to see on the iMac, Mac Pro, and Mac Mini.

Mac Studio’s compact design, comprehensive I/O selection, and superior performance make this compact desktop computer an easy choice for professionals.

However, if you’re in the market for a new Mac Studio, the base variant may be confused with the M1 Ultra. So, below, we will share our opinion on this; Here are three reasons why the basic Mac Studio model is good enough for most people.

1. Doubling the price does not mean doubling the performance

You might think that you will get twice the performance when you spend twice the money on Mac Studio. But as it happens, things are not quite as simple as they are on paper.

Apple used its UltraFusion threading technology to connect two M1 Max chips and create the M1 Ultra chip. As a result, the M1 Ultra in Mac Studio has twice as many CPU and GPU cores on paper. The M1 Ultra chip can also accommodate higher RAM and bandwidth to supplement additional CPU/GPU resources.

So, you might think that the M1 Ultra chip will always provide twice the speed and performance. no.

Despite its high multi-core performance in benchmarks, the M1 Ultra offers nowhere near twice the performance in real-world use. However, some applications that need more GPU resources can take advantage of additional CPU and GPU cores. Likewise, the M1 Ultra Mac Studio can also handle intense multitasking if you stack more RAM.

Regardless, the M1 Ultra’s superior performance is overkill for most people. So, unless you have these specific needs for your profession, you don’t need to double the money on the M1 Ultra.

2. You get the same amount of outlets

For many people, improved connectivity options are one reason to buy Mac Studio instead of Apple’s other desktop offerings, such as the Mac Mini or Mac Pro. The versatile I/O panel on the front and back can help you simplify your workflow.

The base model Mac Studio and the M1 Ultra offer the same number and variety of ports. You get four USB Type-C ports that support Thunderbolt 4, a 10GbE port, two USB-A ports, and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the back.

Plus, you’ll have access to an SDXC card slot and two USB Type-C ports on the front. However, there is a slight difference. The base model of Mac Studio includes two standard USB-C ports on the front. But these ports will have Thunderbolt 4 support on the M1 Ultra.

However, four USB-C ports that support Thunderbolt 4 are good enough for most people. We think twice the amount for Thunderbolt 4 speeds shouldn’t be spent on two additional ports.

3. You can save a lot of money

For reference, the base Mac Studio model is available for $1,999, while the M1 Ultra costs $3,999. So, we’re talking about a whopping $2,000 difference.

Of course, the M1 Ultra model has 64GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD storage versus the base model’s 32GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. But then 32GB of RAM is plenty for most people. And as far as storage is concerned, you have more affordable ways to add more storage to your Mac.

In the end, the base model M1 Max Mac Studio is the most reasonable choice. Even when you consider the specifications, it is a good investment for the price you pay. In fact, you can use the money you save to upgrade your Mac Studio’s base RAM to 64GB or up to 1TB SSD storage. Until then, your final price will be just $2,599.

By the way, there are several secondary reasons for obtaining the basic model. First, you don’t have to wait long for your Mac Studio to be delivered. Second, the M1 Ultra model is 2 pounds heavier than the base model Mac Studio.

Don’t overspend on Mac Studio

I’ve seen that the base model Mac Studio is a great choice for most people. Unless you need features like multi-stream ProRes playback or lots of RAM, it’s best to avoid the M1 Ultra and save some money.

Alternatively, you can reallocate the budget to create the best environment for your Mac. You can do this by getting Apple’s Studio Display or other high-quality accessories.
