After a long off season, the Dallas Mavericks basketball is almost back. The pre-season schedule begins on October 5, and regular season play begins just two weeks later on October 19. And like every year, the Mavericks made some changes over the summer.
This time, they weren’t all great. Dallas lost Jalen Bronson in free agency, and although Spencer Dinwiddy should be able to effectively replace him in the first set, they still didn’t replace his overall production. However, the Mavericks strengthened their frontal area by adding Christian Wood and Gavel McGee.
Wood and McGee are set to play big roles in the Mavericks, joining the front yard of Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber and Dwight Powell. However, while they will all be big factors in Dallas’ game plan going forward, the star of the show is a bit confused.
In what soon became Twitter clip is spreading fastMavericks star Luka Doncic was calling McGee. Unfortunately, he ran into some problems in the process. While trying to get his attention, Doncic is heard shouting “Joel” instead of “Jivali”. He quickly asked a cast member for help with the pronunciation, but fans were quick to laugh at the mistake.
It was downright wrong, and given that Doncic speaks multiple languages and has a lot of other things on his mind, it’s easy to let a misunderstanding pass. And although his comments were before Doncic mispronounced his name, McGee clearly has a lot of respect for Doncic.
McGee praises Doncic at Mavericks Media Day
JaVale McGee spent last season with the Phoenix Suns and delivered some of the best numbers of all 36 of his career. However, his season was ended by Doncic, as the Mavericks defeated the Suns in seven games, ending in an ugly 7 game (for the Phoenix).
during His press conference for media dayMcGee revealed that his seven game streak against Doncic played a role in his signing with the Mavericks.
“Watching seven games in a row for Luca definitely helped with the decision to come here,” McGee said. “He’s a player that gets everyone involved. I love being around players like that. All the attention he gives and the way this system is set up to get all the shooters involved, which really opens up the path for players like me who are so lively at the edge.”
McGee’s vertical presence would give Doncic a huge threat to work with, and head coach Jason Kidd is particularly excited about this aspect of his game.
Kidd discusses Doncic McGee’s call
Throughout his career, McGee has proven to be a very big sportsman. And while he may enter the back end of his career, Kidd still believes his ability to play over the edge will be a huge help for Doncic.
“He is an excellent man,” Kid said. “I think the relationship between him and Luca where they play together a little bit more will grow. Luca will find him, and he has to be ready. But he is one you can throw almost anywhere and he will make the catch and finish.”
Hopefully, Doncic has learned McGee’s name by the time he throws balls in the regular season.
