Haryana Steelers Appoint Veteran Defender Joginder Narwal As Captain


NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 3 The Haryana Steelers, on Monday, announced that veteran defender Goginder Narwal will be their captain for the ninth season of the Pro Kabaddi League, which is set to start on October 7.

Joginder, the two-time title-winning left cornerback, was bought by the JSW Sports-owned franchise for Rs 20 lakh at auction in August of this year.

Because of his exploits over the past few seasons, Joginder Narwal has been considered one of the best defenders in the league.

Speaking about his appointment, the 36-year-old expressed his happiness and said he will work hard to help his team win the title this season.

“I am grateful to the management of the Steelers and JSW Sports for trusting me in this responsibility. I am confident in the capabilities of our team. Working alongside our squad players in training sessions has given me confidence that we are ready to challenge for the title. Our team has held up well in pre-season and will help It’s in the way we communicate with each other on the carpet.”

“I take the role of captain very seriously. Haryana Steelers fans have always expected the best from us. I will work hard not to let our fans down and restore the confidence the team management has shown in me,” added Joginder.

Speaking of Narwal’s appointment as captain, Haryana Steelers coach Manpreet Singh said, “Joginder is a very experienced player with many years of professional kabaddi under his belt. He has been the captain of Haryana Team Nationals. There are hardly any players with the same experience as him in the league He is therefore respected by everyone around him. I am sure the players will support him.”

“Joginder is also a very strategic player. He is always aware of what the situation is in the match and makes plans accordingly. He is quick at deciding when to slow down the match, when to speed up attacks, and these decisions can often turn the game on its head.” he added. Coach Manpreet: “We are confident that he will lead the team to the best of his abilities.”

Joginder started his Pro Kabaddi League career with the Bengaluru Bulls in 2015, scoring 30 points in 14 matches. The left corner moved to Bonneri Paltan in the 2016 season, where he earned 38 points in 16 games. After an injury-prone season with U Mumba in 2018, Joginder moved to Dabang Delhi, where he has grown to become a major player in the franchise.

Joginder earned 51 points in 22 matches in 2018 with Delhi and was one of the reasons behind Delhi’s rise to the final in 2019. He scored 32 points in 19 matches in 2019 and helped Delhi win the title.

Haryana Steelers will start their campaign against the Bengal Warriors on the 8th of October at Sri Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
