Maaa is a pink hollow that looks like a leaf ghost. They can only communicate by saying their name just like a Pokemon, but they are able to evoke a wide range of emotions with that one word. Maaa initially takes on a hostile role after Riku’s animal Meinya is seriously injured, an act that is severely punished under Hulu Village rules. After they lose the doll that was their most valuable possession and have various parts of their body torn apart, Maaa becomes Riko’s ally, seemingly regretting her past actions. They’re at Rikuo’s side for the rest of this Made in the abyss arc, protects her and acts as a friend despite her limited ability to communicate. All this prompts Riko to make Maaa a new doll to replace an old doll, which obviously means a lot to them. Tragically, despite all this character development, when the hollow village is destroyed at the end of the season, Maaa disintegrates, and their last job is to watch and protect Riku as she unconsciously escapes.
