The summer of 2010 was big for not only the Miami Heat but the NBA as a whole and, quite frankly, changed it forever. That was when LeBron James made the infamous ‘decision’ and announced his intention to take his talents to South Beach and join Heat All Star Dwyane Wade and also All-Star striker Chris Bosh to form the Big Three in Miami. The team will become one of the most famous in the history of the sport.

Matt Barnes is about to sign in Miami
Matt Barnes joined Shannon Sharp on a recent episode of Club Shay Shay, and one of the things Barnes revealed in the interview was that he was very close to coming with LeBron James and Chris Bosh to Miami as part of the first team of the Heat’s Big Three era and that he was working on it With Heat head Pat Riley and their leader Dee Wade.
“I was literally talking to Pat Riley and Dee Wade, and they were talking about we’re about to build something here,” Barnes said. “There are words from him [James] Coming and there are Bush’s words coming. It’s the free way for me and I’m literally having conversations with Pat Riley.”
Barnes, who was playing for the Orlando Magic at the time, was welcoming the idea of moving south on the highway to play James, Wade and Bush in South Beach before getting a call from Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant on the phone call.

“It’s like a cup,” Barnes said. “We started going back and forth, and he asked me what I’m doing. And I literally tell him I’m talking back and forth, I’m talking to Miami now. He’s like, ‘Nah f-Miami, you want to be a Laker.'” And I’m like hell, and like four days after that I’m a Laker. “
While he did not join the Heat’s Big Three, the Lakers he joined were the league favorites to face Miami in the NBA Finals. However, the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs in the second round, and the Heat lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the Finals that first season before eventually going on to win two NBA titles. Barnes noted that although he missed a championship with the Heat that he wouldn’t trade it years later, he was able to spend time with Kobe Bryant on the Lakers.
Barnes would have been a very strong addition to the Heat team and a prime candidate to take on a good role in the Heat culture and add to their already deep front position with Shane Battier and Mike Miller.
