When the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics draw tonight in their season opener, all eyes will be on Joel Embiid and Jason Tatum. These two rising stars are competing for lofty, long-term goals: MVP awards, world championships, and Hall of Fame plates.

Embiid and Tatum embody the “whatever you can do, I can do better” vibe. As they play different situations – and bring contradictory styles to court – they share the same drive and mindset. Tatum got his first taste of the NBA Finals last season. Embiid is still trying to whet his appetite.

The two spoke honestly about their dreams of a championship, in between an intense workout with their joint coach Drew Hanlin, with Embiid Gad trying to learn from Tatum’s experience. A sample of that conversation, via Hanlen’s popular YouTube series invisible watches:

Embiid: The only thing I need to know is – this is serious – did you feel pressured?

Tatum: The first game was like I wasn’t nervous in the morning. When we ran over there to warm up, it hit me, like, how much he was on the line.

Embiid: I’m trying to figure out how it is, so I can do it next year.

Tatum: I know one thing, once you get there if you don’t come back, nothing else matters.

Embiid: Yes I know. We are about to reach the finals next year. Watch.

Embiid breaks through the ‘next level’ junction

Embiid is a 7-foot-tall center who takes pride in dominating the paint. The Sixers’ attack passes through the closest thing the NBA has seen to Hakim Aliwan. “I want to be the best player in the world. I want to be the best player ever,” Embiid said. “And I know you have to earn a lot to be in that conversation I intend to have.”

Embiid enters the 2022-23 season as a major MVP nominee (again), but his goals go beyond personal awards and regular season hardware.

“I know how good I am and I know how good I can become, which is why this summer I did the work and things to try to get to another level,” Embiid said. “Winning the championship means a lot, and that is the goal. Going to that next season, that is the ultimate goal and I feel I have to reach a greater level.”
