Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies chats with coach Taylor Jenkins while playing for the Detroit Pistons.
The opening night of the 2022-23 campaign was truly an adrenaline-pumping affair between the New York Knicks and the Memphis Grizzlies, which was packed with plays and a definitive adventure in overtime that made it to the wire.
In the end, the Grizzlies came out with a tough win, defeating the Knicks 115-112.
Although the final results are certainly an encouraging spectacle for loyal Memphis followers, the competition as a whole proved to be a real bright spot for both ball clubs.
At least, that seems to be what Taylor Jenkins thinks Parker Fleming of Grizzly Bear Blues reported in a tweet on October 19 The president praised Wednesday night’s show as a match between “two great teams.”
Calling the Knicks an “amazing” team can certainly be seen as a bit of an exaggeration considering they have lost 17 seasons since the turn of the century and are coming off their eighth campaign after less than a season over the past nine years.
However, having Jenkins, who just led Memphis to a second-best NBA record last season, speaking of them in such high esteem should be a welcome compliment to New York.
Knickswing “felt good” against Memphis
Although the unanimous opinion is likely that the New York Knicks are far from considered a great team, during the opening game against the Memphis Grizzlies, there were several players on their roster who performed in the first division, perhaps the most attractive of them all. It was brought up by the fourth year ward, Cam Reddish.
After having an incredibly disappointing 15 games for the Knickerbockers last season when taken over by the Atlanta Hawks on January 13, during the opening game on October 19, the former 10th overall pick received an increased role in the rotation due to the absence of Quentin Grimes.
With this opportunity, Reddish ended up making the most of it, finishing the competition with a stellar base streak of 22 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and block at 60% shot from the ground and 50% shot from depth. In 28 minutes played.
During the team’s post-match media session, The winger discussed his best career performance with the KnicksIt’s good to finally show what he can offer this team when given the chance.
“Obviously middle-of-the-road trading is tough, a new set of players, everything is new. I just try to find my way around, be aggressive, be assertive and play it right,” Reddish said. “…let me say it like this: I I know what I can do. I wanted to make sure I still got it.”
Although he was found sitting on the bench, Reddish finished the night as the second-best scorer in the Knicks behind only Julius Randle who scored 24 points and finished as the third-best scorer overall, with Grizzlies star Ja Morant topping all players with 34 a point.
Morant, Bronson discuss controversial call
The Knicks’ opening night game against the Grizzlies was an exhilarating game that needed extra time to work out. And while it took heroic plays like Cam Reddish’s last triple pointer in the fourth second to get there, for some, the prolonged contest was the result of a few intermittent calls.
In a post-game media session, Memphis star guard Ja Morant discussed one call late in the game As he was with less than a second to go organize, he did what seemed to be setting the start The Grizzlies’ victory has been snatchedbut was eventually called into charge when Knicks guard Jalen Bronson slipped and took the contact that impacted the whistle.
According to Morant, he and Bronson were convinced not to do anything wrong with the play.
“(Jalen Bronson) said to me, ‘That’s crazy,'” Morant said. Memphis News writer Damichelle Cole. “He told me I jumped around him. We weren’t supposed to play these five extra minutes.”
In the end, the Grizzlies went on to win the competition, although a call which the two guards thought was a bit questionable made the effort more difficult and complicated for them both.
