Screen Rant: Lupita, what a great movie. It’s poignant, honest, and full of action. It’s all. Chadwick and Tacala’s legacy is felt throughout the film. Can you talk about how his legacy has permeated into film and into production as well?

Lupita Nyong’o: Well, Chadwick’s life and death were the source for this movie’s story. When we lost him, none of us expected it and Ryan had to deal with how to move forward. He ended up really embracing that question and making it the central question of this novel. How do you move forward when faced with such a great tragedy, with such a profound loss?

We see characters who deal with loss in very different ways, and in doing so, we explore all the different stages of grief and how cyclical they can be. We hope to learn and get to know the characters, but at the same time, there was a desire in each of us to pay tribute to a life that affected us deeply. I think that will comfort the fans because you can feel it, but it’s not a burden to the story. It’s actually the platform, the starting point for the story, and ultimately, we’re looking for and providing hope.

We find Nakia in a completely different place than it was before. Can you talk to me about the motivation behind this change at Nakia?

Lupita Nyong’o: I think the circumstances of what happened in the world [have changed]. The last time we saw Nakia was before The Blip and also, of course, before she lost the love of her life, T’Challa. And these things, these world events and this personal loss, affected and changed her.

We meet Nakia who has matured, whose priorities have changed and intensified. But the one thing that hasn’t changed? She’s the person you want to call when you’re in trouble.

Nakia was a little far from Wakanda. Can you talk to me about her relationship with Shuri and Queen Ramunda, and how this was explored during the film?

Lupita Nyong’o: Nakia has a long-term relationship with Shuri and Ramonda. They are simply her husband’s family. But she’s also a sister character to Shuri and a daughter character to Ramonda. And they have not always seen eye to eye, but there is the love of belonging that they have; Loyalty towards each other. And families, we can quarrel, but we are still pretty much intertwined, and this is her chosen one.
