Cristiano Ronaldo was chewing gum during the opening World Cup match against Ghana, the Portuguese Football Federation said, after a video surfaced on social media that appeared to show the 37-year-old putting on his shorts and eating something while on the pitch.

Portugal said athlete, But Ronaldo was just chewing gum.

Ronaldo gave Portugal the lead with a penalty kick in the second half against Ghana, before seeing the equalizer for the African team soon after, thanks to Andre Ayew. Two goals in quick succession from Joao Felix and Rafael Leao gave Portugal a solid lead despite a late consolation from Ousmane Bockarie.

Ronaldo plays in the World Cup as a free agent, having had his contract with Manchester United mutually terminated shortly before Portugal started the tournament.

The striker returned to United in the summer of 2021, making 54 appearances and scoring 27 goals on his return to the Old Trafford side.

Portugal continues their World Cup campaign with a match against Uruguay on Monday. They finished their group stage matches against South Korea next Friday.
