The round of 16 for the 2022 World Cup starts on Saturday and runs until Tuesday. The knockout stage is probably the most exciting part of the tournament as both teams will play to advance, while some teams may play to a tie in the group stage if they are already in a good position. The knockout stage also introduces penalty kicks into the equation if the teams remain tied after 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time.
Another unique aspect of the 2022 World Cup is that there will be no day off after the group stage, which has resulted in a quick turnaround of teams. Uruguay won Group A at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and had four days off between completing the group stage and playing the round of sixteen. Australia will play the winner of Group C on Saturday after both played their group matches on Wednesday. Both teams will be playing on a short break, but may prefer a team with more depth versus one looking to cause an upset.
The Quarter-Final Pairs are the two Round of 16 matches played on the same day.
