Rape victim’s brother found dead in Meerut in UP

The girl’s family has been warned not to go to the police or they will face the consequences.

The rape victim, a Dalit, was allegedly gang-raped by three men, including the husband of the current chief Pradhan of Bhawanpur village in Aurangabad, six months ago.

The survivor’s father said, “My daughter was abused in August last year by three men. Since then, we have been under intense pressure to withdraw the case by them. Two of the men are history books and have criminal records.”

She was gang-raped on August 27, 2022, but it took the police almost a month to file an FIR,” said Ravikant, who runs Shoshit Kranti Dal, an NGO fighting persecution of Dalits.

The NGO wrote to the SC and ST National Commission, saying that the police did not take immediate action in the matter.

“First, they took a long time to file the FIR in the rape case, and now it’s been 24 hours since the brother’s body was found, but the police haven’t registered a complaint,” Ravikant said.

Arvind Chaurasia, Department Officer (Civil Lines), who was investigating the case, said, “Soon after the FIR was filed, the three accused were booked under IPC Act, POCSO Act and sections of SC/ST Act. Two of the three accused are in jail. The third defendant had submitted a request to be released on bail from the Supreme Committee, which was rejected a week ago.
