She was born on February 18, 1955 in Memphis, Tennessee. Her nutrition education came from the University of Tennessee, where she earned her degree.
After completing her undergraduate degree, she continued her education at Memphis State University and earned her master’s degree in Food and Nutrition there.
While attending the University of Memphis, she held positions as a registered dietitian, counselor, and director of the state health department.

- 1980 was the year she established herself as a weight loss consultant. She created and developed a program called The Weight Workshop while she was working on her master’s degree at Memphis State University.

Gwen, her husband, and five other remaining fellowship church members were all killed when the plane they were traveling in crashed into a lake in Tennessee on May 29, 2023.
The plane made an emergency landing at Lake Percy Priest, which is located near Smyrna, Tennessee, shortly after takeoff.
According to information provided by county officials, the board members are Jennifer J. Lara, Gwen S. Lara, David L. Martin, Jessica Walters, Jonathan Walters, and Brandon Hannah. Authorities confirmed each individual death.
Gwen Champlin: The Relationship
David Champlin and Gwen have been married since 1978 and will remain so until 2018. Michael Champlin and Elizabeth Champlin Hannah were the children of the couple.
