MTA says hundreds of people live in New York City subway stations and subway

About 350 homeless people were recently found living in camps in subway stations and tunnels, according to transportation officials Thursday. The personnel were distributed among 29 camps in the tunnels and 89 at the stations, according to a survey conducted by the Maritime Transport Authority on February 2 and 3 as part of a “track encroachment” task force set up in December to address the slight increase in route encroachment. Task Force Leader Jimmy Torres Springer said the tunnel camps “lead directly to the tracking of trespassing incidents,” which the…

Letters to the Editor – February 24, 2022

The problem: Mayor Adams’ plan to make the Underground trains safer by increasing social service and a police presence. There is no doubt that the issue of homelessness is an issue that needs to be resolved (“Subway Homeless Assistance Teams to a Slow Start,” February 23). Simply ignoring the problem, as Mayor Adams’ predecessor did, is not a solution. Locking up people doesn’t solve the problem either. These people were once productive members of society and, for whatever reason, descended into a life of drug addiction and mental illness. Adams’s…

Police said Charles Hodge, 67, responded by pushing the child. “It was just a regular kick and you know, kids, they don’t stay on the train,” mum, Kayla McCutchen,…

Eric Adams’ plan for the homeless is safer for us and better for them

Do Homeless Advocates really want what’s best for them? We ask as Mayor Adams demonstrated the political courage to do what his predecessor did not: make our subways safer and more welcoming for all. “No more smoking, no drug use, no more sleeping, no more barbecuing in the subway system. He no longer does what you want him to do,” Adams said as he began his subway safety program on Monday. Those days are over. Listen, listen! Of course, advocacy groups are preparing to take action, promising to file lawsuits…

New NYC subway safety plan takes effect after violent weekend

Mayor Eric Adams’ new subway safety plan goes into effect Monday after a series of violent transit accidents over the weekend. New York Police Department teams and outreach workers are set to begin checking trains and subway stations across the city as part of the mayor’s plan to crack down on rule-breaking and end homelessness. The teams will also seek to identify mentally ill and homeless people in an effort to prevent them from living on trains and at stations – and work to provide the treatment they need. “No…

What Adams, Hochul must do to get workers back to Manhattan

Mayor Eric Adams wants you to go back to the office. Last week, he said of New Yorkers working from home, “I need them to do another job, get back to work. Let’s get our city up.” The mayor is promoting charitable payments for fallen travelers — but that’s not what works. He needs them to believe that coming to the office is in their hands King interests. Adams is right to recall that Midtown is still here. As with many of the mayor’s initiatives, this concept may seem obvious.…

Victim of deadly subway gang attack plans to sue the New York City Transportation Authority

A Bronx man rescued by Samri Saleh during an alleged gang attack plots to sue the city’s transit authority over the horrific ordeal – which left his “angel” mortally wounded by a train. Roland Huston, 36, was killed by an oncoming D train after he rescued Noel Soto, who lost consciousness when a group of gang members allegedly threw him over the rails early on New Years Day in the Bronx. “He didn’t even know me,” Soto told The Post through tears, in an exclusive interview last week. “He gave…
